Clean Water and Sanitation: Why Are They Important?
If there is no water coming out of the tap tomorrow, how would that impact your life?
If you live on the other side of the planet, would your answer be different?
For people living in rural areas of developing countries, having clean water can change their lives.
Unfortunately, 785 million people worldwide still lack access to clean and safe water sources.
On average, 1 in 10 people has to walk at least 30 minutes to get to the closest drinking water source. Millions of women and children have to give up opportunities for education and livelihood because they had to travel long distances to fetch water for the family. Yet, raw water are usually filled with bacteria or parasites, and drinking it directly can cause deadly disease at any time.
Health
Access to clean water and basic sanitation facilities can prevent children from getting sick from drinking unclean water, and also reduce the risk of people spreading diseases due to fecal contamination of the water sources.
How Can Clean Water Change Everything?

Health
Access to clean water and basic sanitation facilities can prevent children from getting sick from drinking unclean water, and also reduce the risk of people spreading diseases due to fecal contamination of the water sources.
Pandemics
The pandemics has made us aware that providing clean water, building safe sanitation facilities, and cultivating good hygiene habits are important first lineS of defence against outbreaks of viruses and other diseases.

Women Empowerment
Around 80% of families living in water scarce countries rely on women and girls to collect water. Every journey entails long distances and heavy burdens. The time required is more likely to cause girls to drop out of school and give women fewer options for earning income.
Time
With easy access to water and convenient and safe sanitation facilities, rural villagers no longer have to travel long distances to accommodate daily needs. This means that they can devote their precious time to other areas, such as finding a livelihood and going to school.

Education
Clean water within reach can reduce the time for children to collect water and also improve their health. This gives them a chance to continue going to school and can have a positive impact on their lives.

A Promise of a Future with Clean Water
Access to clean water and safe sanitation is a basic human right. Everyone should have the right to obtain adequate, safe and affordable water resources for personal and household uses. In 2015, all members of the United Nations adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a universal call to action to end poverty, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030, of which SDG 6 is "Clean Water and Sanitation" — "to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all".
